Online Therapy for Moms: Flexible Mental Health Support

Online Therapy

Over the past decade and especially the past couple of years, online therapy has grown and become increasingly popular.

For moms, online therapy can be a game-changer—offering flexible, accessible mental health support without the added stress of leaving home.

Online therapy, also known as telehealth, e-therapy, distance therapy, virtual therapy, and web therapy is receiving mental health therapeutic services via the internet.

There are many perks of online therapy, such as being at home, not having to worry about traffic, parking, and waiting in the waiting room. For moms, it means you don’t have to arrange childcare, disrupt your baby’s nap schedule, or carve out extra time in an already overwhelming day to commute to an office.

Online therapy can also eliminate a lot of barriers such as the exhaustion of physically going to a therapy office, the logistical challenge of finding a therapist nearby who specializes in maternal mental health, and the unpredictability of life with a baby or young child.

Is online therapy effective?

A big concern for many people is if online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. A variety of different studies have found that overall online therapy can be helpful with many people reporting a high level of satisfaction.

For moms, online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy, particularly for common postpartum struggles like anxiety, depression, and identity shifts. In fact, having therapy in your own home can sometimes be more comfortable and convenient, allowing you to engage in the work without added stress.

Online therapy is not for everyone

Many mental health concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, parenting struggles, and the mental load of motherhood can be treated online.

Online therapy is not for someone who is in crisis, has thoughts of hurting oneself or others, or has difficulties with reality, such as hearing voices or seeing things (in a psychotic episode). If you have thoughts about hurting yourself or others please call 911 or the National Suicide Hotline at 988.
